F# as a Nashville Chart Sees It
Seven numbers, seven chords, and the three that carry a mark.
Count off in F# and the seven numbers name F#, G#, A#, B, C#, D#, F — in that order, every time, on a page that never mentions F# anywhere.
Three of those need a mark and four do not. A bare number is a MAJOR chord, so 2-, 3-, 6-, 7- are what a chart writes when it wants the chord the key would have supplied anyway; a bare 2 means the writer wanted something else and meant it.
An upright player reads the same root the electric reads and a longer way to get to it — the chart says which number, and the distance between two numbers on this fingerboard is what decides whether it is walked or arrived at. The digit is the same digit the electric got; what differs is the distance the left hand covers to reach it, which is why this reader looks at the NEXT number sooner than anyone.
